CorpusMate v2: corpus linguistics meets AI – and it changes everything
When we launched CorpusMate in 2023, the goal was simple: make corpus linguistics accessible to teachers and learners who didn’t have the technical background to use professional tools. The response from the corpus linguistics and language teaching community was extraordinary.
v2 takes that foundation and rebuilds it around a single idea: what if the AI assistant could actually see what you found?
What’s new in v2
The core corpus search tools are significantly upgraded:
Concordance now shows 15 words of context on each side (up from 5), groups results by the most frequent surrounding 4-gram pattern, and colour-codes every word by part of speech. Click any line to expand the full sentence, metadata, and — for Elsevier articles — a direct Google Scholar link.
Collocations now computes five association measures simultaneously (Frequency, MI, MI², MI³, and Log-likelihood), with adjustable window size and frequency threshold. MI² is the new default — the most balanced measure for general-purpose collocation research.
Disciplinary Variation is now interactive. Click any bar to filter concordances to that corpus or discipline and get AI commentary on how the term is used in that specific context.
N-grams now drill through to concordances on click, with results cached so switching tabs doesn’t lose your work.
But the biggest change is the AI integration.
The AI assistant reads your results
In v2, the AI doesn’t just answer general language questions. When you search for a term, the AI panel receives your actual concordance lines, collocation scores, n-gram frequencies, or dispersion data as its context. When you ask a question, it’s reasoning about your specific data — not a generic answer from training data.
And when corpus data is insufficient, it tells you so explicitly, then draws on its general linguistic knowledge — clearly labelling which is which.
But the best option? – Four user roles! We’ve also introduced a role system that fundamentally changes how the AI responds:
Researcher — technical, analytical, uses corpus linguistics terminology
Teacher — creates classroom activities, gap-fill exercises, and discussion tasks from real corpus patterns
Student — Socratic mode: asks guiding questions, gives hints, makes interactive exercises rather than giving direct answers
Language learner — plain language, practical examples, warm and encouraging tone
